America observes May as the 'Skin Cancer Awareness Month ...

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in America with one American dying of skin cancer every hour. The government has declared the month of May as the National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in U.S. The month will commemorate the awareness drive among the masses regarding preventive measure, early detection and treatment of the disease.

The facts and figures
The melanoma affects the people of all ages and races although it is more prevalent among those in the 80s and also in whites rather than African Americans. It may also affect those aged below 30 and more common form of cancer in young adults.
The cancer form is rifer in females than males below the 40 years of age however the incidence rates doubles in the males above 40 years of age.
The lifetime likelihood of the disease is nearly 2.7% for men, 1.8% for women, 2% for whites, 0.1% for African Americans and o.5% for Hispanics.
Melanoma contributes close to 5% of all skin cancers but accounts for the majority of skin cancer deaths.
In the year 2008, nearly 6,000 American adults were diagnosed with melanoma and 8,623 died of the disease.
The prevalence of the disease is on the rise from past 30 years at a rate higher than any other form of cancer. The incidence rate in those aged 18 or below has increased by 84% from 1975 to 2005.
The most common form of skin cancer in Americans is Basal cell carcinoma followed by Squamous cell carcinoma with probable 2.8 million and 700,000 cases diagnosed respectively every year.
According to the recent estimates about 116,000 fresh cases will be diagnosed in 2012 and one in every 50 persons will be afflicted by the disease.

Safety measures
Exposure to the UV rays and history of suntan are the avoidable risk factors of skin cancer. American Cancer Society suggests timely health check to rule out skin cancer and also awareness regarding sun exposure.
Protect yourself from sun?s UVA and UVB rays by applying sunscreens with SPF 30 or more.
Wear clothing with long sleeves and those covering the body.
Keep away from indoor tanning as the risk of skin cancer is increased manifolds just after four tanning sessions as per a recent study.
Don?t depend on the sun rays for vitamin D; rather use vitamin supplements or dietary intake.
Check your skin regularly for any abnormal changes and visit a dermatologist yearly for a thorough skin examination.
